Descriptions of Minden PDF Print E-mail
Echoes of Our Past
Written by John Agan
Friday, 23 July 2010

This week’s Echo of Our Past we will examine two old descriptions of Minden. The first was written in 1898, by Catherine Cole, a writer for the New Orleans Picayune. Cole traveled all across Louisiana and sent her impressions back to the New Orleans paper. Her story was reprinted in the Webster Tribune of November 30, 1898. The second account was written in 1914 by the editor of “The WOW Forest,” a publication of that lodge. It was reprinted in the Minden Signal-Democrat of February 13, 1914.

One of the most recognizable landmarks of downtown Minden is Main Street with its bricks.

We often like to mention Minden’s brick streets, but as was recently pointed out to me by a relative newcomer, we now only have a single brick street.

This week’s Echo is not a well-researched exploration of a topic but rather an idea that hit upon me while doing such research.

I will apologize in advance because two of the topics touched in this article are not particularly pleasant. The discussion of a somewhat light topic will include brushes with racism and prostitution.

Echoes of Our Past

Recently the water levels on Bayou Dorcheat have been as low as I can recall them ever being.

The wreckage of at least one old steamboat has become visible and just north of the 1930 era Highway 80 bridge over the Bayou the piers of a much earlier bridge have emerged, again for the first time in my memory. But, late May and early June are not always times of low water on Dorcheat.

1882: May was the month of city elections PDF Print E-mail
Echoes of Our Past
Written by Juanita Agan
Friday, 21 May 2010

Last week we looked at events from May 1901, 109 years ago. This week’s column will look at the local events in Minden in May 1882, 128 years ago, as they were reported in the pages of the Webster Tribune.

In those days, May was the month for city elections, but in 1882, the elections were not a big news story. Mayor P. W. Paul and the other city officials were returned to office without serious opposition. In fact, Mayor Paul won his race by a vote of 108 to 1.
