In last week’s Echo I gave an overview of the involvement of Confederate troops from the Minden area in the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War. This week’s Echo is going to largely be the official report filed by the officer in overall command of the local troops during that fighting. One of the treasures in preserving the history of the Civil War is a historical record compiled by the United States Department of War during the years between 1880 and 1901. Titled, The War of the Rebellion: a Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, it contains in 4 series totally 70 volumes all the military communications from the war on both sides. The weekend before Christmas I had the chance to once again visit the Shiloh National Military Park in Southern Tennessee, the site of the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War. In this situation I was seeking the cause of death of a young lady who died in her early twenties here in Minden during the first decade of the 20th century. In one edition of the local newspaper it was mentioned that she had returned from a visit to a nearby town and was feeling ill. Be first to comment this article |

Currently, there is a committee working on obtaining funding to complete much-needed repairs and improvements at Griffith Memorial Stadium in Minden. As I have mentioned in previous columns, as a child I was puzzled about why our local baseball stadium was named after the historic home of the hapless Washington Senators. For those of you who are in somewhat the “same boat”, today’s column will be a brief history of Griffith Stadium. Be first to comment this article |
