The other night I watched on cable the movie, Thirteen Days, that gives an inside glimpse at the high stakes diplomatic brinkmanship that took place during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. That historical period is particularly special to me. I was born in June 1958, and the Cuban Missile Crisis is the earliest historical events of which I have any memory. My memories of the Crisis are spotty, with isolated unrelated events standing out. The one dominant memory is of the worry and apprehension I sensed in my parents. The tradition of celebrating Mardi Gras began in Minden after the Civil War, about the time the celebration became so large in New Orleans. By the early years of the twentieth century the celebration of Mardi Gras was a special occasion in Minden. Beginning around 1902 the festivities grew in size each year until 87 years ago this week, February 13, 1923, when one of the worst tragedies in the history of our town occurred during a Mardi Gras celebration. Titled, The War of the Rebellion: a Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, it contains in 4 series totally 70 volumes all the military communications from the war on both sides. This week we are celebrating the Christmas season and the birth of Jesus, so my column is a mélange including three stories of long ago Christmases in Minden and an editorial from the Minden Tribune of the 1920s, reminding us of the true reason for the season.
