Echoes of Our Past
Written by John Agan
Friday, 18 January 2008
In last week's Echo we looked at the local stories that attracted attention and coverage in the pages of the New York Times. Those stories were from the years between 1856 and 1882 and most of them were reports of violence or atrocities, as sadly that is what "sells newspapers." The excerpts in this week's column will be "more of the same." Two reports will be of executions - one government sanctioned, the other being carried out by a mob. I will remind anyone that might be offended by some of the language used in these articles, that words we consider offensive today, particularly when used to describe individuals or groups, were not regarded that way over a century ago. These articles are copied exactly as they originally appeared.

Echoes of Our Past

I often tell my history students that they live in a very different world in terms of media than the one that existed for most of our nation’s history. I am referring to the significance of newspapers in the public consciousness that was so strong in the past but is rapidly decreasing. The advent of television did much to change that status, but it seems that the Internet may finally be the death of the printed newspaper with which we were so familiar. Many of you may well be reading this online and I must confess that I do almost all my reading of the newspaper online.

Echoes of Our Past
Written by John Agan
Friday, 04 January 2008
I started to research today's Echo of Our Past in early 2001 in response to an e-mail request for help in genealogical research.  In my work at the Webster Parish Library, I received this request from Dr. Carl J. Mora, who was then a United States Government historian at the Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico.

Today's Echo of Our Past will be the story of one of the first subdivisions added to our community, the Goode Annex. Part of that story will include the real source of the name Wilson Park while giving us a picture of residential growth in Minden 90 years ago.

A book from 1886 about local businesses

A few days ago on eBay I came across a copy of a very rare account of North Louisiana from over 120 years ago, 1886. I was able to purchase the book and I received it in the mail this week. In this week’s column and next week’s, I will be reprinting the portions of the book that deal with Minden and Webster Parish, including the profile and the advertisements for Minden businesses.
