Bossier Parish Community College and the Cavalier Players announce the production of the magical “fractured” fairy-tale musical, Once upon a Mattress, October 23 – November 2, at BPCC’s Performing Arts Theatre located in Building C at 6220 East Texas Street in Bossier City. BPCC Theatre Arts student Kim Webb will play Princess Fred, the character that introduced a generation to the comedy of Carol Burnett, who originated the role on Broadway in the late 1950’s. Dr. Ray Scott Crawford will direct the musical which is based on the beloved fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea.” Once upon a Mattress presents the soaring music of Mary Rodgers, with lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Marshall Barer, and Dean Fuller.
With the original Broadway production and the more recent revival with Sarah Jessica Parker, Mattress has become one of America’s most recognized musicals. Here is all the charm of a fairy tale with knights and ladies, minstrels and jesters, and wizards and evil queens. Director Crawford states, however, “This is a somewhat ‘twisted’ retelling, more akin to Rocky and Bullwinkle’s ‘Fractured Fairy Tales.’ It’s a little bit bawdy with screwball comedy flair” The Los Angeles Times says the musical is “witty and tuneful.” Talkin’ Broadway calls it “fun and effervescent.” MSNBC dubs it “a peppy spoof.” The hilarious musical story of romance takes place “Many Moons Ago, in a Far Off Place”, as the opening song suggests. Queen Aggravain jealously protects her son Prince Dauntless from marrying any eligible princess and will not allow anyone else in the kingdom to wed until her son does. When Sir Harry and Lady Larken learn that they are to become parents, wed or not, Sir Harry takes matters into his own hands and goes into the swamp to search for a bride for the prince. There he discovers Princess Winnifred. The Queen is horrified and schemes to get rid of Princess “Fred,” but aided by Sir Harry and the Jester, Winnifred stakes her place in the kingdom. Stephen W. Slaughter, Director of Theatre, is producing the show. Crawford is also music directing, Kim Webb is choreographing, David White is designing sets, Rona Leber is designing costumes, Keith Bruce is designing lights, and Vanna Richardson is stage managing. Additional cast include Sam Condon as Prince Dauntless, Joyana Feller as Queen Aggravain, Daniel Cordell as King Sextimus, Haley Young as Lady Larkin, Matt Carroll as Sir Harry, Demario Tyson as the Minstrel, Hooker Campbell as the Jester, and Mike Elmore as the Wizard.
