Students, faculty and parents alike will be lacing up their walking shoes to help bring in money for area schools during the second annual Walk For Education, in conjunction with Alliance for Education. The second annual fundraising walk will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 4, at the Minden Recreation Complex, located off of Industrial Drive. T-shirts for the walk will be on sale on that day. “This is a good deal for the schools and the kids,” said Webster Parish Superintendent Butch Williams. “It allows the kids to participate in a fun, healthy exercise while earning money for their schools. The schools keep a portion of the money earned, while the other part goes to Alliance For Education, which turns right back around and puts it in the schools anyway.”
Walk for Education is in conjunction with Alliance For Education, a program through which civic leaders of the community are charged with the task of promoting public education. Through the walk, students earn money according to how many miles they walk during the event. “With the money, awards are also provided for schools that score high on standardized tests every year, as well as funding for necessary school projects each year,” Williams said.
