Webster Parish Council on Aging is preparing a variety of health activities, information, food and games for this year’s Annual Health Fair to be held Friday, Oct. 17. The function will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Minden Civic Center free of charge and the elderly are encouraged to participate. The rental of the Civic Center is courtesy of Minden Medical Center. “This has turned into a major event. We are trying to reach those who normally wouldn’t have a way to get some of these things done,” said Patsy Dees, Program Director.
Springhill Medical Center employees will be on-site testing cholesterol and blood sugar levels. According to Webster Council on Aging Director Dathene Brown individuals participating in these test should fast, with the exception of required medications and doctors orders, so that a true reading my be obtained during testing. Flu shots will also be available to elderly Medicare recipients. Fred’s Pharmacy is furnishing the vaccines. There will be two nurse practitioners on hand to administer shots. Approximately 300 shots will be available. Those interested should be prepared to provide their Medicare cards to receive a vaccination shot. Humana Insurance will provide a healthy noon meal for attendees. Fun for the day includes Bingo, door prizes and a cakewalk. “There will be a lot of good information and we want people to take advantage of this event,” said Brown. As a courtesy of the Webster Parish School Board transportation services will be available. Individuals in the Minden area should call 371-3056 regarding transportation needs and other assistance. Those near the Springhill area should contact Joyce Shirley at 539-2510. All vendors asked to stay for the duration of the event. Views: 1149
