All the hard work making the lawns and the flowerbeds and the entrances to the school and the courtyards look beautiful paid off! Those involved in the “beautification” were the Benton custodial staff, including George Bloomingdale, Deborah Bruno, Rachel Combs, Myrtis Gibson, Marie Henderson, Patrick Walker, and Randy Williams. The group was recognized at the recent Bossier Parish School Board meeting. Also recognized at the Bossier Parish School Board meeting last week was the Benton High ROTC Unit, for achieving the 2008-2009 Air Force Junior ROTC Distinguished Unit Award with Merit. Benton High ROTC Instructors and Sponsors Lt. Col. John Collier and MSgt. Tim Martin were recognized as Outstanding ROTC Instructors. The award means that they are in the top 10% of ROTC Instructors across the United States. Lt. Col. Collier says, “It is the Benton ROTC students who make all of this happen.” Congratulations to all! The Bossier Parish School Board also recognized SMART program members Wesley Adams and Tyler Vincent from Benton High, along with several other students from area schools, for their achievements. The SMART program, which stands for “Science and Math Academic Research Training,” requires many extra hours of work from the students. The goal of the program is to identify students with an interest in medical and scientific research and provide them with an opportunity to perform research in Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport (LSUHSC) laboratories. The sponsor of the Benton SMART program is teacher Carol Wade. Three BHS students, Ashley Coker, Kayla Green, and Brianna Jeter, attended the 2009 Youth Art Council of America Convention in Lafayette, Louisiana, April 30 – May 2. This year’s theme was the “Value of Art.” BHS students were awarded two 1st place ribbons for a $9 banner design that mimics a $9 bill in the style of M.C. Escher. The 1st place ribbons were for Most Original and Best Craftsmanship. Ashley Coker was also awarded a 2nd place ribbon for her scratchboard artwork and Kayla Green was elected State President of the YACA organization for the year 2009-10. The YACA sponsor is art teacher Theresa Laws. Congratulations to these Artists! Tiger Tales is written by the students of Benton High School and is edited by Linda Robinson.
