The Springhill Police Department was the recipient of a grant in the amount of $107,450, which was presented to Chief Ronnie Coleman Sunday by Governor Bobby Jindal. Jindal was in town where he was guest speaker at Central Baptist Church. The grant was received through the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and President Obama’s Federal Stimulus Package.
Detective Dexter Turner submitted the grant application several months ago and was notified in April that the police department would receive the funds. Det. Turner was in Baton Rouge for a training seminar April 16-17, when he was presented the award during a ceremony at the Hilton Hotel. This was a very competitive grant program and the SPD was one of three law enforcement units in the parish to receive the grants. Coleman accepted the check from Jindal in a brief ceremony at the RV building Sunday. The funds will be used to purchase three new police vehicles, laptop computers for police vehicles and a computer-aided dispatch program that will allow the office to dispatch directly to officers in their vehicles. “This equipment will allow our officers to forward and receive reports to and from the office while they remain in the high-crime areas of the city,” Coleman said. “This will help stimulate the local economy by reducing the amount of loss to the citizens and businesses from thefts.”
