The Bolts — Marriage and Ministry PDF Print E-mail
Written by Press-Herald Staff
Thursday, 02 July 2009

“Only one life will soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.” This is the motto that Nancy and Richard Bolt have lived by for their 39 years of marriage and ministry.

When Richard saw a lovely young lady and her family come to his home church back on March 14, 1966, he told his best friend that he was going to marry that girl.

It took many nights of Nancy crying on her “friend” Richard’s shoulder about disappointing dates with other fellas before she realized that he was a fantastic catch. Her eyes were opened to his true intentions on Christmas 1968 when Richard gave her a lovely yellow sweater. That sweater was the start to a beautiful union of souls.

When Richard asked for Nancy’s hand in marriage, her father said yes. Mr. Hicks later told Richard, “You know if you can’t take the whole woman, you can’t have her hand.”

After the proposal was accepted, the happy couple began planning their wedding.  On the evening of the lottery draft for young men to go to Vietnam, Richard and Nancy were sitting on the couch trying to select a wedding date. Lost in the excitement, the couple did not hear Richard’s birthday called.

Responding to the call, Richard went to have a physical and begin the process of fighting for his country. Unaware of a genetic back abnormality, Richard was told that he could not serve in Vietnam and was sent home. The couple continued their plans and was married on June 19, 1970 in DeQueen, Ark.

The next group of years brought many calls to minister in the states of Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Those years also brought “three little misses”:  Richelle, Angela and Tamara.

The Lord provided for their needs and those of the church.  A truckload of groceries given, concrete slabs poured, clothes bought, trusses paid for, many “handfuls on purpose” … these are all examples of God’s favor upon their ministry as well as their lives.

Three of the churches they pastored twice. One such church is the one that they are currently pastoring in Doyline — Point Chapel Assembly of God. After coming as interim pastors, they will be proud to celebrate their 2nd Anniversary as senior pastors of the church this August.

While Richard attends to the needs of the church during the week, Nancy has continued to work as a food representative for National Sales and Marketing.

On May 21, while returning home from a long work week, Nancy suffered a spinal injury from a car wreck outside of Sibley. After being air-lifted to LSU-Medical Center, she had to undergo a surgery to repair a burst vertebrate. When she woke from the surgery, she thought she was at the church preparing music for Sunday. Her heart has ministry at the core.

With God’s direction, they decided to have Nancy go to the in-house rehabilitation facilities at Minden Medical Center where she has received excellent care from the therapy and nursing staff, three of which are pastor’s wives.

While working with the staff to strengthen her legs to walk again, Nancy has made strong connections and lasting friendships. These new found friends learned of the couple’s upcoming anniversary and worked with the ladies of Point Chapel Assembly of God to create a memorable evening for the couple.

Knowing that Nancy was unable to leave the facility, the staff and ladies decorated an unused room and surprised Richard and Nancy with a romantic steak dinner.

After four weeks of therapy, Nancy and Richard are more hopeful than ever of her full recovery where the Lord will continue to use them to complete His work.
