Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center will hold a Star Party, featuring hands-on activities and rooftop viewing of stars and planets through the science center’s telescopes, this Friday, July 24, from 8-11 p.m. “The main event will be seeing Jupiter up and coming in the eastern sky,” said Sci-Port Astronomy Programs Leader Greg Andrews. “We’ll also be able to see several bright dots around Jupiter. These are the Galileo moons, named after the first man to discover moons around a planet besides Earth.”
Andrews said visitors will also be able to see the Scorpio Constellation and a visually stunning collection of stars known as the Summer Triangle. Early arrivers, he added, will have the chance view the sun through solar-filtered telescopes. Hands-on programs, ongoing throughout the event, include Galaxy Face Painting and two make-and-take activities: Planetary Bracelets, a mini-solar system for the wrist; and Star Finders, a craft toy whereby players learn about the constellations. Admission is $5, $3 for Sci-Port members, and no reservations are required. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Sci-Port: Louisiana's Science Center is a 92,000 square-foot science and entertainment center featuring 290 hands-on exhibits, a Space Center and Space Dome Planetarium, IMAX Dome Theatre, demonstration theater, daily changing programs, gift shop and cafe. Sci-Port is located at 820 Clyde Fant Parkway on the downtown Shreveport Riverfront. For general information call (318) 424-3466, toll-free (877) 724-7678 or see www.sciport.org. Views: 503
