A month ago, Battle Wings quarterback Andrico Hines had completed 59.3 percent of his passes for a team that was battling Rio Grande Valley for second place in Southwest Division standings. Hines completed 76.7 percent of his passes in the Battle Wings’ last four games. More importantly, he threw 17 touchdown passes and only one interception as the Wings rolled into the playoffs as Southwest Division champions. Bossier-Shreveport will carry a franchise record seven-game winning streak into a Saturday night playoff opener against division rival Rio Grande Valley at the CenturyTel Center.
Hines finished the season one short of the year-old franchise record of 77 touchdown passes set by Gary Cooper last year, but nobody has been more efficient in the stretch drive of the season. The Battle Wings, 11-5, are the No. 3 seed in the National Conference. Rio Grande Valley, 9-7, is the No. 6 seed. Both teams have players who broke af2 records this season. Fullback Jason Schule of the Battle Wings broke af2 records for one game (112, against the Corpus Christi Sharks) and one season (655, breaking the previous record by 155 yards). Last week, he broke the career record set by former Battle Wings quarterback Sherard Poteete and tied the record of 28 rushing touchdowns in one season. Rushing Yards, Career 1—1387 Jason Schule, Bossier-Shreveport, 2006-09. 2—1346 Sherard Poteete, Bossier City 2001-03, CBS 2003, Bossier-Shreveport 2004. 3—1086 Darnell Small, Arkansas 2000-05, Oklahoma City 2007. 4—1034 Demetrius Forney, Louisville, 2002-05, 2007-08, Manchester 2006, Kentucky 2009. 5—966 Ryan Vena, Albany 2002-03, 2006, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 2007-2009. Rio Grande Valley rookie wide receiver Rod Windsor set an af2 record for touchdown catches in a season with 59. The Battle Wings won two of their three regular-season games with Rio Grande Valley.
