The FLAME Summer Tech Camp 2009, a weeklong camp during which students participate in project-based lessons that integrate video technologies, concludes today. The camp, held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon each day, was coordinated by Region VII TLTC Facilitator Nan Stephens and two consultant teachers, Vicki Martin and Debbie Baskin.
Each day of the camp focused on a different core curriculum topic; therefore students learned ways to use video technologies in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. The students will leave the camp with the skills necessary to become “peer experts” at their schools and will be able to assist teachers and students in the use of the technologies. The students will receive a special badge to wear at their schools and each student in the camp will receive a Flip video camcorder and flash drive for their personal use. The schools will receive sets of digital cameras, video camcorders and web cams for use in classroom instruction so that all students will have access to these tools. The FLAME Program was financed through two Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) Competitive Grants for 2009-2010. The EETT TLTC grant provides $250,000 to maintain the Region VII TLTC in Webster Parish. This Teaching, Learning and Technology Center focuses on professional development for administrators and teachers in the Region VII parishes. Stephens serves as the TLTC facilitator and coordinates state-approved professional development sessions in the effective integration of technology into the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum. A second grant, EETT Connected Tech, provides $100,000 to implement a yearlong professional development program for sixth grade core curriculum teachers at Phillips Middle School and Glenbrook School. This is the first time that the private and public school systems in Webster Parish have worked together on a project. Patsy Whitlow, technology coordinator, Linda Hudson, Phillips principal and Naomi Coyle, Glenbrook curriculum headmaster collaborated on the writing of the EETT Connected Tech grant. Professional development for these teachers begins August 4. Teachers participating in this grant will receive laptops and video projection equipment to use as presentation stations for both teachers and students. The students participating in the summer camp were Justice Beavers, Isaiah Boston, Zack Brown, Alora Bryant, Caroline Cone, Raylicia Dillard, Donte Lindsey, Brian McLaughlin, Taylor Robinson, Brooke Sappington, Josh Wilkins and Ethan Wynne.
