Harris’ interception wraps up 21-14 win over Gators

Airline’s Vikings clinched another winning season and moved one step closer to the Class 5A state football playoffs with a 21-14 victory over Captain Shreve at Lee Hedges Stadium Friday night.

Airline, now 6-3 for the season, rolled up 287 yards rushing and held the Gators to 37 yards rushing.

But Captain Shreve, which went into the game with a higher power rating, had 205 yards passing to 24 for Airline, and drove to the Vikings’ two-yard line in the last three minutes before Domonic Harris intercepted a fourth down pass and returned it into Gator territory.

A penalty on the return moved the ball back to Airline’s 35, but the Vikings were able to run the remaining time off the clock with one more first down.

Airline wraps up regular-season play Friday with a home game against Southwood, which is 4-6 after a 36-0 loss to Ouachita at Monroe last Thursday night.

Reggie Jackson led the Vikings’ rushing attack Friday night with 171 yards on 20 carries, including a 21-yard touchdown run that capped Airline’s 89-yard drive on its first possession.

Albert Robinson had 59 yards rushing on nine carries, including a seven-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Connor Nichols had 31 yards rushing on 15 carries and completed two of five passes for 25 yards.

Airline went into the game ranked No. 29 in Class 5A power ratings and Captain Shreve was ranked No. 25. Three of the four teams ranked directly below Airline lost last week, and the other (New Iberia) beat a Terrebonne team that has won five games. Airline should not lose ground to them with its win over six-win Captain Shreve.
