Jury studies e-waste disposal PDF Print E-mail

The Webster Parish Police Jury discussed a number of topics during its regular public session Tuesday including electronic waste recycling (e-waste).

E-waste is defined as all secondary computers, entertainment device electronics, mobile phones, and other items such as television sets and refrigerators, whether sold, donated, or discarded by their original owners. This definition includes used electronics, which are destined for reuse, resale, salvage, recycling, or disposal.
District 8 Juror Charlie Odom brought the issue to the jury’s attention.

Odom and a representative of Suddenlink have been in contact with each other regarding the program possibly making its way into Webster Parish.

“I’ve had a government liaison from Suddenlink from Jonesboro, Ark. emailing me for the last month and a half,” Odom said.  “They (Suddenlink) are trying a program on e-waste.”

Odom said those with the program are looking to partner with government entities in Webster and Bossier Parishes.

“I’m trying to get them to go with the local 4-H group also and promote their program,” he said. “I think we need to look at it and see because it would be a good public relations for the jury and the community to do e-waste.”

The jury and an individual from Suddenlink will meet and discuss the recycling endeavor today at 11 a.m. at the police jury office, located inside the Webster Parish Courthouse.

“E-waste is your electronic waste, include I-pods, computers and stuff like that.” Odom said. “Our landfill can accept it. I’m hoping we can find a place to strip it down and take out the useful components of it (waste product) and ship it out. Now, I’m not sure if it will be worth it or not.”

The Webster Parish Police Jury is already an active participant of the newspaper-recycling program. However, due to policy changes with Wal-Mart Corporation, the recycling trailer sponsored by the jury and Trailblazer Organization has been relocated temporarily to the lot behind the Webster Parish Health Unit and the LSU Ag Center off of Homer Road and behind Spiller’s Plaza.

A new permanent location for drop offs will be announced at a later date.

We welcome a recycling solution for electronic devices instead of pitching them in the landfill.

Webster Parish and the City of Minden also need to step into the 21st century and implement voluntary recycling of cardboard, plastics, and aluminum, at a minimum to keep these valuable resources out of the dump. This idea was tried many years ago but uneducated or uncaring citizens used many of the recycle bins to dump plain old trash.

I recently spent 2 weeks in the SE and the community and county have mandatory recycling policies with fines or penalties imposed if aluminum, cardboard, plastic, or other recyclable materials are found in the normal household trash.

Well said nitpicker!

The city as well as the parish need to step up on this.
