Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover on behalf of Bossier Mayor Lorenz Walker issued an historic joint proclamation Wednesday proclaiming the entire month of November 2009, "Pause for the Poor Month" across Shreveport and Bossier City. With a large group of Christian Service board members, city and parish officials, and local ministers looking on, the Caddo Parish Commission also issued a similar proclamation for November as “Pause for the Poor Month.”
Christian Service, a program that began nearly 40 years ago, by Sister Margaret McCaffrey provides two hot meals daily at its Hospitality House, (formerly Freeman & Harris Restaurant), but its other programs provide shelter, utility assistance, clothing, and computer literacy and job preparation. Christian Service Board member Tom Pace says this is an opportunity for the community “…to help keep Sister Margaret’s dream alive,” by donating $5 for each ticket to the event. The proclamations serve to encourage the local community to support and attend the annual Christian Service "Poor Man's Supper," to be held this Sunday, November 8th from 6p-7p in the Hunter Activities Building of First United Methodist Church in Shreveport.
