It’s another year and another quarterback for the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. But this time, it’s also another league — and the quarterback is Shreveport’s own Raymond Philyaw, who achieved legendary status in the now-defunct Arena Football League.
Philyaw, who played high school football at Southwood and had a record-breaking college career at Northeast Louisiana (now UL-Monroe), has signed with the Battle Wings for the inaugural AF1 season, which replaces the AFL as the nation’s premier arena league. His AFL career, starting with the Albany Firebirds in 2000, includes stints with the Indiana Firebirds, Chicago Rush and Kansas City Brigade. His career passer rating of 117.3 is the fourth highest in AFL history. But his most impressive numbers are 464 touchdown passes and 54 interceptions, a ratio of 9.03 to one that is easily the best in AFL history. He threw 299 consecutive passes without an interception. Philyaw’s 24,723 yards passing and 464 touchdown passes both rank 11th in AFL history. He is now an assistant coach at Calvary Baptist Academy. Philyaw, 35, has come home to launch a new arena career in a new league with the Wings, who earned af2 playoff berths with Quincey Carter, Gary Cooper and Andrico Hines at quarterback in the last three years.
