SOUTHAVEN, MS – Simon Mangos scored the game-winning goal at 1:22 of overtime and Ken Carroll made 45 saves as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs topped the Mississippi RiverKings 3-2 on Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The Mudbugs are now above .500 for the first time this season at 7-6-0 after winning their last three games.

For the second straight night, the Mudbugs were heavily outshot but came out on top with strong penalty killing and great goaltending.  Mississippi finished with a 47-23 shot advantage, but finished 0 for 6 on the powerplay. Joe Blaznek and Dave Pszenyczny scored for the ‘Bugs during regulation to help set the stage for Mangos’ third game-winner of the season.

After the Mudbugs had the early shot advantage, Mississippi took a 1-0 lead in the contest when Kevin Jarman tapped in a back-door feed from Ryan Campbell to start the scoring at 12:25. The ‘Bugs answered back less than two minutes later after intercepting a clearing attempt by RiverKings goaltender Ray Jean. Joe Blaznek’s ensuing shot bounced off a Mississippi defender and through Jean’s five-hole to tie the game at one after one period. The ‘Kings outshot the Mudbugs 16-9 in the first.

Mississippi came on strong in the second period, firing 19 shots on net compared with just four for Bossier-Shreveport. Ken Carroll made all the saves though and the Mudbugs managed to keep the game tied at one despite three more RiverKings powerplays in the period.

The Mudbugs went on top in the third when Dave Pszenyczny ripped home a powerplay goal (his first of the year) to make it 2-1 just 3:26 into the period. Mississippi tied it up again with Darrell Stoddard’s unassisted goal off a rebound chance that made it 2-2.

Bossier-Shreveport controlled the overtime period until Mangos skated down the boards and cut towards the slot, throwing a puck toward the net that found its way past Jean to give the Mudbugs their first overtime victory of the year.

Carroll has now won two straight games after the 45 save effort, while Jean stopped 21 shots in the OT loss. The Mudbugs converted one of two powerplay chances.
