As Marketing Coordinator at Minden Medical Center, Jennifer Spurlock has always had a fascination with the field of medicine. “My dad is a microbiologist, so I grew up fascinated with the medical field and began college determined to become a pharmacist,” she said.
She also worked in a pharmacy in Shreveport during high school and enjoyed helping others. It seemed she was destined to follow that path. “That all changed when I came face to face with calculus,” Spurlock said. “So I decided to take a different route in order to help others.” Once she faced that fact, Spurlock decided a little self-reflection was in order. “I took an entire summer off to sit back and research my options based on my interests,” she said. “With the support of my family and friends, they helped me decide what I would be best at and how I could use my creativity.” The college student then changed her major to marketing and immediately, within the first marketing courses, knew she had made the right decision. She began receiving experience by working as the Marketing Director at Chick-fil-A, as a marketing professional for ReachLocal Internet Marketing and participated in an internship in the media department at LSUS. “I realized after working part time in the field that I was in love with marketing and wanted to pursue a full time career,” she said. Having an eye for graphic design has helped Spurlock in her field at MMC, and every day she goes to work in a state of creativity. “I have the opportunity to work with graphic designers closely to communicate our services and awards to the public,” she said. “Because I am familiar with the design process, I am able to make that process flow smoothly and offer new ideas as well.” Sometimes, that state of creativity includes other aspects of her job. “It may mean finding new ways to stay on budget or unique ways to advertise for a new program or decorate for a grand opening,” she said. “It makes the job fun and exciting. I’m never doing the same thing every day.” Spurlock was born and reared in Bossier City, where her family currently lives. She is the oldest of three children and the only daughter. In April, she married Chip Spurlock, son of Dr. and Mrs. Ray Spurlock of Minden. The couple moved to Athens, which has allowed Jennifer to see a different side of life. The Spurlocks are members of Athens United Methodist Church and Jennifer recently joined the Young Women’s Service Club in Minden. “We just finished remodeling our home, so I spend my spare time shopping, decorating the house,” she said. She also enjoys scrapbooking, swimming, fishing, cooking, reading a good book and tagging along on a few hunting adventures. Views: 907
