Food bank asks for holiday drives PDF Print E-mail

With more and more people feeling the effects of the economy, food pantries and hunger relief agencies have seen an increase in requests for food and a decrease in donations.

To alleviate this, the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank Holiday Food & Fund Drive kicked off the first week of November and will last thru Dec. 21.

The Food Bank’s distribution is up 39 percent over last year. That is why the food bank is asking the community to help out their neighbors who may be finding it tough to make ends meet.

Now, more than ever, the food bank’s services are needed to ensure that those being negatively affected by the economic downturn and high food prices have access to the healthy food they need to feed themselves and their families.

The food bank is working to meet the rise in requests for services and need the help of our community to achieve their mission. They are asking businesses and organizations around the seven-parish service area to hold food or fund drives. The variety of businesses and various locations participating in this event will make it easy for anyone throughout the area to help fight the war against hunger.

Donations may consist of non-perishable canned and boxed foods as well as monetary donations in the form of a check made payable to the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana. A food drive may run for any length of time and end no later than Dec. 21 so as to get the donations to the local agencies prior to Christmas.

The Northwest Louisiana Food Bank, one of only five food banks in the state, serves seven parishes of Northwest Louisiana. The food bank collects food both nationally and locally to distribute to over 100 non-profit agencies within this seven- parish service area. Some member agencies include: The Salvation Army, The Rescue Mission, Volunteers of America, Providence House, Shreveport Community Renewal, YMCA, YWCA, and many others throughout Northwest Louisiana.
