Grover C. Lowe, 68, of Minden, died Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Schumpert Highland Hospital in Shreveport, from complications following heart surgery.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 27, 2009 at North Acres Baptist Church, 1852 Lewisville Road, Minden Conducting the service will be James H. Jones and Randy Miller, nephews of the deceased.
Grover was born June 10, 1941, the youngest of eight children to Dewey and Esther Lowe of Minden. He grew up in Minden and graduated from Minden High School with the class of 1959. Following graduation, he joined the Air Force.

Including his five years in service was a tour of duty in Alaska, working with National Security.

After his discharge, he eventually found his way back to Shreveport where he met and married his wife of 44 years, Melba Toothman of Monongah, W. Va. They made their home in Shreveport until they moved to Minden in 2000.

While there, he worked as Supervisor for Lucas Waste Water Treatment Plant until his retirement. He then became Executive  Secretary for the Louisiana Conference on Water Supply, Sewage and Industrial Waste – a position he was holding at the time of his death.

Grover was of Baptist faith and a member of Grace Tabernacle in Shreveport. He was actively involved for many years in A.A., 35 years with “40-8,” where he served as Chef de Gare twice, and the National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed gardening and was quite the “farmer,” sharing his produce with many. A love he developed in his later years was working with wood, changing rough lumber into beautiful outdoor swings, baby cradles, etc. Each piece brought him pride in the accomplishment of a job well done.

Grover was always young at heart and was looking forward to the time when he would have a a “train” room fixed so he could again display and play with his railroad network of model trains.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Esther Lowe; stepmother, Theo Miller Lowe; sisters Lucy Jones, Darthie Wiltheis and Melba Lowe; nephew, Ricky Miller; stepbrother, Billy G. Miller and brother-in-law, Herrel Jones.
Grover is survived by his wife, Melba; brother, A.D. Lowe (Betty); sisters, Lera Dunn (William), Faye Miller (C.D.) and Patsy Mancuso (Dominick): brother-in-law, George P. Wiltheis; 10 nieces,; seven nephews; one stepnephew; one stepniece; many great and even great, great nieces and nephews; in-laws; cousins and other relatives and loving friends.

He was a man who loved his family and friends. His unselfish nature was revealed even more by the donation of his body to LSU for medical research and training. Although Grover will not be with us physically, his presence will be with us in our hearts forever.

Memorial gifts may be given to A.A., the American Heart Association,  American Diabetes Foundation. St Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the donor’s favorite cause.
