The town and Country Garden Club held their November meeting at home of Mrs. Jeri McCormick on November 16, 2009. Hostesses were Jeri McCormick, Kathy Dumas, and Margaret Collins. President Yvonne Jackson opened the meeting with prayer. Everyone enjoyed delicious refreshments and a time of fellowship prior to the program.
Mrs. Jackson then introduced the speaker, Mitzi Madden of Loye’s Pharmacy & Gifts. Ms. Madden gave a brief overview of the services provided by Loye’s Pharmacy other that prescriptions including UPS and Fed Ex pickup, fax and copies, and gift wrapping and delivery of gifts to wedding and baby showers. Ms. Madden then discussed new and traditional gift items that were displayed for viewing including Christmas, wedding, baby, and gifts items for year round gift giving, Ms. Madden discussed the process for buying the gifts at market and the care which she and her family take in choosing items that are sold in Loye’s Pharmacy. Following Ms. Madden’s presentation, Mrs. Jackson opened the business meeting by thanking the hostesses. In the absence of Judy Chandler, secretary, Libby Orenbaun read the minutes and called roll. Nineteen members were present. Hannah Simpson gave the treasurer’s report. Mrs. Susie Lester gave horticultural hints including a reminder to plant tulip bulbs that have been chilling in the refrigerator. Geraniums can be over-wintered by placing them in an outside storage building and in the spring with a trim, water, and a bit of fertilizer, they will bloom again for another summer. Mrs. Lester told about some blooming plants such as lantana and English aster that are Insectory plants, which means they attract beneficial insects to the garden such at butterflies and bees and are considered a natural pest control. Mrs. Lester read about Little Gem Magnolias noting that although they are slow growing, they are still in the grandiflora category will reach the height of regular magnolia trees. The November Yard of the Month was presented by Dolores Calise and Betty Gentry to Rev. and Mrs. Frank Jones on Dogwood Drive. The next meeting of the Town and Country Garden Club will be held December 8, 2009 at the Glenwood Tea Room on Line Avenue in Shreveport with visits to the shops of Mrs. McGregor’s Garden and Chinaberry’s Gifts and Garden on Benton Road.
