I’m seeing many people all over the world this year who are getting excited about the festivities, but are missing the main event. During this season, it has been easy for them to get distracted by the shopping and hustle and bustle and the presents. Somewhere in all of that, the celebration of My birth tends to get lost.
In order to encourage you to keep Christmas 2009 in proper perspective, I want to tell you about My birth and the people who played a part in it. First of all, there was my mother, a woman named Mary. She met her true love—a man named Joseph—and was engaged to be married to him. However, there was a problem. She had not had sexual relations with her husband-to-be, but she was pregnant. In her day, it was shameful for a woman to be pregnant out of wedlock. The women of her day who found themselves unmarried and pregnant were stoned to death when the disgrace became public knowledge. And then there was My father. He was a just man. He was an honest man. He was a good man. He was a man of principle. The fact that his wife-to-be was pregnant out of wedlock created a terrible dilemma for him. On the one hand, he didn’t want to make a public example of his wife and expose her to the possibility of being stoned to death. On the other hand, he could not and would not marry a woman who had disgraced herself and him. He had decided to break the engagement quietly so as not to disgrace her publicly, but an angel appeared to him in a dream and said, “Don’t be afraid to go ahead with your marriage to Mary, for the child in her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20, New Living Translation). Because he was a just man and because he trusted My heavenly Father, that explanation was sufficient for him and he chose not to break the engagement. And then there was Me. I came into the world with a specific destiny. Because I was conceived by the Holy Spirit, I was not a part of man’s bloodline. I was placed in my mother’s womb by My heavenly Father Himself. I was born without sin, something no man or woman can truthfully say about themselves. So, part of My destiny was to be sinless. And then, another part of My destiny was to be a Savior—more accurately, the Savior. I was introduced into the world to seek and save those who were lost. I was perfectly qualified to do that. A third part of My destiny was to be a sign to the world. My birth fulfilled the prophecy that was spoken hundreds of years before by the prophet Isaiah. “The Lord Himself will choose the sign,” said Isaiah. “The virgin will conceive a child!” (Isaiah 7:14a, New Living Translation). Sure enough, just as Isaiah predicted, My mother was a virgin when the Holy Spirit conceived Me in her. And then there’s one more part of My destiny—I came to live on this earth. Isaiah also predicted that. He said, “She will give birth to a Son and will call Him Immanuel—‘God with us’" (Isaiah 7:14b, New Living Translation). The old prophet was speaking about My incarnation--meaning I would come to the world you live in now and dwell among men and women, boys and girls. I spent 33 years on the earth, and because I experienced everything you have experienced or will experience, I understand completely what you deal with, day in and day out. Why? Because I was fully God, meaning I was omniscient and knew everything, and because I was fully man, meaning I experienced everything men and women experienced, except. I did it all without sinning. Now, as Paul Harvey would say, “Here’s the rest of the story.” I was born in the town of Bethlehem, during the reign of King Herod. That day, that hour, that minute, that second, is what you’ll celebrate on December 25th—My birth. As you hurry to finish your shopping, I hope you’ll remember these things I’ve told you about My birth and I hope you’ll focus on the real meaning of this season. I want you to know Me. I want to fulfill My destiny in you—I want to be your Savior. Bossier Parish Sheriff Larry Deen’s column appears each month in the Bossier Press-Tribune. Views: 1473
