The 199-foot cross at Central Assembly of God will light up the night sky this Sunday. The Cross lighting ceremony will be the climax of the church’s Christmas production, “The Glory of Christmas” a benefit concert for the Shreveport Providence House, Sunday night at 6 p.m.
Afterwards, the congregation will gather outside to watch as the light switch is turned on to illuminate the Cross. “It is only fitting that the Cross be lighted during the Christmas season to remind everyone that Jesus is the Light of the World,” said Rev. Andy Harris, pastor of Central Assembly of God. “We invite everyone to be present for this historic occasion.” The tolling of bells and Christmas carols will accompany the lighting of the Cross. The 199’ steel Cross, designed by Cornerstone Engineers of Madisonville, Tenn., and constructed by Headrick Companies of Laurel, Miss., is one of the tallest crosses in the world. Manufactured out of 140 tons of steel in four sections, the Cross has an additional foundation footing of steel and concret. A prayer garden surrounds the Cross with a plaza of faith featuring a large Star of David accented by memorial bricks and meditation benches. A drive-through dramatic presentation of “Christmas at the Cross” with a live nativity scene is planned for Dec. 21-22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Views: 1499
