“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light. They that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.” Isaiah 9:2, Holy Bible, KJV
The prophet Isaiah spoke to a particular people in this prophesy given 800 years before the birth of Christ but he also spoke to all people of all time because the light of which he spoke was Jesus Christ, who would provide the ultimate sacrifice to pay for all the sins of all mankind for all time. And that sacrifice would provide the way for countless multitudes through the years to enjoy a permanent personal relationship with Jesus Christ and abundant life as promised by Jesus himself who said in John 10:10, Holy Bible, KJV: “I am come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” And that abundant life which Christ gives manifests itself in the every-day acts of kindness and sacrifice that are typical of Christians who live such lives and in no time is that kindness more needed and appropriate than at the time when we celebrate the birth of the Christ of Christmas. As we proclaim “Merry Christmas” we must be aware that Christmas is a time of great darkness for many. For those battling great health problems, some terminal, it is a dark time. For those facing divorce and breakup of families, it is a dark time. For those for whom this is a first Christmas without a loved one, it is a time of darkness. For those who have lost jobs and are struggling with just paying monthly bills with no hope of special presents for their children, it is a time of darkness. Every-day-ordinary Christians are expected to be on the front lines to show Christ to others and one way that this is done is through our actions. Christians are to be the light that helps shatter the darkness of the world; by a kind word or deed, donated time, monetary and material gifts, counseling if one has the gift and just being there helps. The story is told of the little girl who came home from school and told her parents of a great tragedy in the family of one of her friends. When asked by her parents, “What did you do?” she replied, “I just sat down beside her and cried with her.” For those reluctant to get so personally and individually involved, we are blessed in this area to have so many organizations that provide light in the darkness of many lives. Americans are a generous people and we are so blessed by our Country and by this area in which we live. We are blessed by our wonderful, unselfish active military men and women, most of whom will not get to spend Christmas with their families and they deserve our thanks and daily prayers. And we always remain blessed by, and thankful for, our veterans. Willie Chevalier Benton, La. Views: 683
