Alleged robber to stand trial PDF Print E-mail

A trial date has been set for a Springhill man charged with the robbery of a Magnolia, Ark.  bank on November 13.
Anthony D. Lewis, 29, will face his federal bank robbery charge at 9 a.m. Monday, February 8 in U.S. District Court at El Dorado, Ark. before Judge Harry F. Barnes.

U.S. Magistrate Barry A. Bryant set the date in an order issued on Monday following Lewis’ formal arraignment at the federal courthouse in El Dorado. Lewis was indicted by a federal grand jury December 9 on the bank robbery count.

The order also set into motion requirements for the defense and federal prosecutors to disclose the evidence they intend to use during the trial.

Lewis waived his right to a detention hearing during the arraignment. He remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Lewis is represented by Carl F. Cooper III of El Dorado. Matthew C. Quinn of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Fort Smith will prosecute Lewis.

The Summit Bank branch on the U.S. 79-82 bypass was robbed at gunpoint about 3:50 p.m. Friday, November 13. A tip led lawmen to a parking lot of the Church of Christ on South Washington Street in Magnolia, where Lewis was arrested. Authorities recovered a black duffle bag filled with cash, and also found bundled and individual bank notes that were strewn across the parking lot.

A gun was later recovered.

Magnolia Police Chief Robert Gorum said following the arrest that Lewis also fit the description of a man wanted for a dozen armed robberies in Magnolia, Waldo, Ark.,  Stephens, Ark. and Springhill committed during the previous two months. Lewis is charged with seven robberies in Columbia County, in addition to the bank robbery count.
