There are so many overnight events and opportunities for 4-H members of all ages, where young people can make new friends, gain independence in a safe, caring environment, and learn new things! There is 4-H Summer Camp for youth in grades 4-6, Challenge Camp and L.O.S.T. Camp for 7th and 8th graders, and 4-H University (formerly known as Short Course) for 7th through 12th graders.
There are also Camp Counselor and Adult Overnight Chaperone opportunities for high schoolers and adult volunteers, as well as “specialty camps,” such as Roughin’ It Camp, Survivor Camp, Marsh Maneuvers and Wild Woods Wanderings. “Summer Camp is the most popular 4-H activity among Webster Elementary 4-H members,” says 4-H Agent Lisa Holmes. “For the past few years, we have filled our quota and had a waiting list.” 4-H agents will be passing out Summer Camp Registration forms and information during January club meetings, and registration will begin February 1. Forms will also be available at the 4-H office in Minden. Summer Camp dates for 2010 are May 24 -28. Challenge Camp (February 18-21) is a weekend camp for Jr. High youth, where the focus is on teamwork, self-esteem, leadership and other topics related to this age group. Agents will also be passing out registration for Challenge Camp during January club meetings, and registration will begin January 4. L.O.S.T. Camp (Louisiana Outdoor Science & Technology), is a five-day summer camping experience similar to regular summer camp, but designed for 7th and 8th graders with an emphasis on Science, the Environment, Robotics and other science-related topics. It will be held July 31-August 4, 2010. Signup for this camp will be later in the school year. 4-H University, slated for June 22-25, is an annual event held on the LSU Campus in Baton Rouge for 7th-12th graders who are age 13 and older. 4-H’ers can either compete in one of many contests or participate in an educational program called Clover College. Some contests include Outdoor Skills Triathlon, Automotive Driving, Horticulture demonstrations, Computer Science and Fashion Revue. For a full listing, visit www.lsuagcenter.com. In the Clover College track, 4-H members can select an educational program in which to participate. These change each year, and we do not have a full listing of upcoming tracks. Signup is going on now. There is always a need for overnight chaperones. Contact the Webster 4-H agents if you or other adults you know would be interested in serving as an overnight chaperone.
