A zoning variance request is one of the few items on today’s agenda for the Minden City Council’s first meeting of 2010. Rebecca Schmidt, option holder on property located at 1201 Tillman, is asking for the change from R-2 (Single Family Residential) to B-1 (Neighborhood Commercial) in order to operate a preschool/daycare center.
On December 21, the Regional Planning Commission voted unanimously to send Schmidt’s request to the council with its blessing; however, at least one citizen is opposed to the idea of her specific business. Pecan View resident James Stephens sent a letter to the planning commission, stating that Schmidt’s desired location is close to the intersection of Lewisville Road and Tillman Drive. “This is a very busy intersection,” Stephens’ letter said. “There have been many traffic accidents at this intersection.” Stephens’ letter also questioned the location of Schmidt’s parking lot and if a fence would be located on it. The Regional Planning Commission makes recommendations to the council, which has the final vote. Other items on the council’s agenda include: Elect Mayor Pro Tempore for 2010; Address condemned property at 404 Midland Street; Make appointments of Cynthia G. Payne and Lyn Sinclair to the Minden Historic Downtown Development/Residential Commission; and, The monthly report from the Minden Police Department. The council will meet today at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers, Minden City Hall. The public is invited to attend. Views: 786
