Garden Club holds end of year meetings PDF Print E-mail
Written by Marta Belton
Monday, 04 January 2010

The Minden Garden Club met on Tuesday, November 10, at the LSU Ag Center in Minden. Hostesses were Martha Belton and Margie Chisholm.

Twelve ladies enjoyed a wonderful program presented by florist David Kelly from Plain Dealing.

Mr. Kelly’s program was titled, “Using Nature’s Gifts.”  Working with many different varieties of dried plants, he put together lovely combinations appropriate for fall arrangements in the home.

His plant choices were found in his yard and along the roadside, which demonstrated how easy it is to find plant materials for very attractive and creative presentations.

Mrs. Lucille Womack’s yard at 103 McArthur Drive was chosen as November’s Yard of the Month.

On Tuesday, December 8, the Minden Garden Club met in the beautifully decorated home of Beverly Hood. Christmas sparkled everywhere on trees, gifts, mantel arrangements and table decorations.

A delicious salad luncheon was served to 18 members.

Plans were discussed and finalized for the presentation program at the downtown Bell Garden, scheduled for December 18.

A work day to plant pansies and spruce up the garden was planned for December 16.

The club decided to make the Bell Garden the Yard of the Month for December.

Friday, December 18, a brief program at the Bell Garden was presented to memorialize four deceased members of the Minden Garden Club, which was founded in 1945.

A beautiful commemorative stone for each member was designed and created by Joyce Hinton and installed by Harold Weaver. The stones were placed under the bell, which was once housed in the Minden City Hall and was generously donated to the City of Minden by the Powell Family of Sibley.

The families of honored club members Mrs. Vasta Green, Mrs. Roy Inabnett, Mrs. Rosalie McInnis and Mrs. Thelma Sanders were in attendance. Different garden club members remembered each lady fondly and with great respect as committed gardeners who worked tirelessly to encourage the beautification of Minden and the preservation of our natural resources.
