Minden’s St. Jude Auction tops all previous years’ totals

Another chapter in a story of hope is in the record books. Minden’s St. Jude Auction topped all records this weekend with a grand total of $881,885, an increase of more than $5,600 over 2009.

Melissa Brown, who co-chaired the auction with Christie Ruple, said neither the economy nor loss of viewers during the Super Bowl kept them from surpassing last year’s total.

“We’re really proud of this community,” Brown said. “We’re thrilled with this total and want to thank everyone who was involved – from the volunteers to the givers – this was definitely an auction for the record books.”

Lindsay Walker, region representative for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, said the Minden St. Jude “family”  is a great group.

“These are the most hard-working and committed people that I have ever worked with,” Walker said. “They are personally touched by the hospital, and they always come through for the hospital. I feel like they are my second family.”

The doors closed on this year’s auction, which began Thursday, February 4, with a final drawing for the Grand Prize around 11 p.m. Sunday. John and Kathy Moore of Minden will have the option of the GMC Yukon Denali or the $50,000 in cash (before taxes). Of the 2,500 grand prize tickets available, 2,249 were sold for $100 each.

Partner in Hope winners are Amber Benson – flat screen TV; Lindsey Tanner – Trip to Disney World; and Joey and Susan Odom – the ruby and diamond necklace, ring and earrings.

Margaret Evans won Cora Lou Robinson’s painting of the auction. The raffle and purchase of the giclees’ brought in almost $7,000.
