Webster Parish schools raise big bucks Webster Parish children can accomplish amazing feats, as is evident in this year’s total school contribution to St. Jude — $117,409.51. Webster Parish Superintendent Butch Williams commended and recognized the great effort put forth by the students, parents and staff at schools across the parish during Monday night’s school board meeting.
“I am so proud of the students of Webster Parish,” said Williams, who provided a four-year history of school donations. In 2007, schools across the parish donated $53,742.77. In four years, the students more than doubled the amount raised for the children’s research hospital. Central Elementary once again surpassed last year’s donation of $41,088.13 with a grand total of $62,181.76 — a more than $20,000 increase. Each year, a wide variety of incentives are offered at Central Elementary during its St. Jude fund-raiser. A huge crowd pleaser in 2010 was a promise by Principal Marvin Jones — raise $50,000 for St. Jude and he would shave the center of his head, perm the hair on the side and dye it red — in clown fashion. The students surpassed the challenge and Principal Jones sported his new “do” at the St, Jude Auction. Richardson Elementary donated $16,071 and Minden High School raised an even $10,000 during its one-hour fund-raising effort. In their first fund-raising effort, Brown Upper Elementary raised $1,710.95 and Browning Elementary raised $2,034. Of the 14 schools participating this year, nine exceeded last year’s collection.
