Unless a playoff is necessary to settle a second-place tie in district standings, regular-season play ends tonight for six Bossier Parish high school girls’ basketball teams. All six teams are expected to qualify for the state playoffs, including Haughton — which has already wrapped up regular season play with a 10-16 record and doesn’t play tonight.
Each of the other five teams has won at least 20 games going into tonight’s action. Airline (22-11) plays host to Southwood, which has already wrapped up the District 1-5A championship and has a shot at the third perfect season in Steve McDowell’s 19-year stint as the Lady Cowboys’ coach. Southwood (32-0) is seeded No. 2 behind Natchitoches-Central in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Assn. Class 5A power ratings. If this Southwood team joins the 1999-2000 team (36-0) and 1001-02 team (33-0) with another perfect season, it will have more victories than the other two. McDowell’s Southwood teams have won 10 state titles. He also coached a championship team at Class C Southfield, for a state record total of 11. If the Lady Cowboys keep their perfect record intact tonight, Airline will have to play Byrd to break a tie for second place in District 1-5A. The playoff is necessary because the first place team in each district receives a one-point bonus and the second place team receives a half-point in final power point ratings, which determine playoff pairings. With the pairings to be announced Monday, the playoff would have to be on Saturday. In other games involving Bossier Parish teams tonight, Parkway (which has already clinched the 2-4A title) visits Bossier High, Benton plays host to Minden and Plain Dealing, which has wrapped up its eighth straight District 1-A title, travels to Ringgold. Boys’ games are scheduled for the same gyms tonight, but the boys have another week of regular-season play. Parkway’s girls carry a 22-6 record into their game with Bossier High (21-10) tonight. Benton carries a 20-10 record into its game with Minden, which is also in position for a state playoff berth. Plain Dealing carries a 21-4 record into its game at Ringgold. The Lady Lions, seeded No. 2 in Class A power ratings, have won 20 or more games nine years in a row. Girls’ games start at 6 p.m., to be followed by boys’ games. Views: 250
