For Bossier High’s Bearkats, the road to an undisputed District 2-4A basketball championship (and a chance for the best season record in the school’s history) still goes through Minden. Bossier High, 32-1 for the season, takes a 29-game win streak to Minden tonight.
The Bearkats are ranked No. 2 in the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Assn. Class 4A poll announced today. Minden (27-5) is ranked No. 9. With a victory, Bossier High would be assured of an outright district championship. The only remaining obstacle to a 34-1 regular-season record, which would assure the Bearkats of the best season record in school history, would be Haughton (13-13) in a Friday night game at Haughton. The Caddo-Bossier record for a Louisiana High School Athletic Assn. school in boys’ basketball is 30-1 (.968), set by Airline in 1985-86. The second-best winning percentage is 38-2 (.950), by Coach Billy Montgomery’s Class A state champion Haughton Bucs in 1968-69. The only other Caddo-Bossier team that lost less than three games was Captain Shreve’s 1969-70 team, which reached the state finals before losing an overtime decision to Brother Martin. Coach Billy Wiggins’ Gators were 35-2 (.946), missing a 36-1 record by one point (or one last-minute charging call). Mike Harrell and Jeff Sudds were All-Staters on that Shreve team. In other boys’ games involving Bossier Parish teams tonight, Airline travels to Byrd in a game that is expected to decide the District 1-5A championship, and Haughton visits Benton in a District 2-4A game. In a non-district game, Parkway plays host to Calvary. Other than Bossier High, Plain Dealing is the only Bossier Parish team in position for a home playoff opener in boys’ basketball playoffs, according to power ratings posted by the LHSAA last week. Plain Dealing (23-5) has clinched the District 1-A title for the fourth year in a row, and is the No. 3 seed in Class A. Airline (21-12) is in position for a playoff berth, but will probably be on the road in the opening round. The Vikings were No. 23 in last week’s power ratings, with the top 16 playing at home in the first round. Haughton (13-13) and Benton (10-12) are both in position for state playoff berths, according to power ratings. Haughton was the No. 26 seed and Benton was No. 27. Minden was seeded 12th, and should be at home in the first round of playoffs. Parkway, 6-22 with a 10-game losing streak, is not likely to qualify for the boys’ playoffs. Views: 307
