Commission for Women’s Celebration of Women Week Luncheon A sell-out crowd of more than 300 was on hand at the Bossier City Holiday Inn Wednesday to honor women in the community with its 18th Annual Celebration of Women Week Luncheon. Sponsored by the Mayor’s Commission for Women, the luncheon was held to promote the success of the women of Bossier City.
The commission is comprised of 25 dynamic and influential women in the business community who are dedicated to promoting and furthering the legal, political, economic and educational opportunities for the advancement of women in the Bossier City area. "These volunteers do a superior job for nothing but personal satisfaction in knowing they are doing a great thing for a good reason," said Walker. Speaker was Bossier-Webster District Attorney J. Schuyler Marvin. Marvin said he knows about women after growing up with three sisters. "I have a scar behind my eyebrow from a hairbrush," joked Marvin. He also pointed out that 80 percent of his staff is women and that they can "work circles around the men." He went on to say that women have a battle to fight in today's world but community role models and a support system help them succeed. "This agency was designed for that very purpose," said Marvin. He believes women are successful because of their ability to focus. "They focus on their goal until it's completed. All of you have goals, and you won't be able to complete them unless you focus," said Marvin. His office is proactive in helping women of sexual or domestic abuse with its vertical prosecutor. "We have a vertical prosecutor that meets with victim of violent crime who stays with that case throughout the entire process. Victims are much more open and responsive to this," said Marvin. Along with public officials and commission members, 18 female Bossier Parish high school seniors from the commission’s Mentoring Program were in attendance. The program grew from 12 to 18 since last year. Proceeds from the event will benefit the YWCA of Northwest Louisiana. "Every single day I get up, I thank God for the ability to serve this community in this capacity," said Amy O'Pry, YWCA of Northwest Louisiana executive director. Since 1986, the Commission for Women of Bossier City has strived to address the needs of women in the Bossier Parish Community, The Commission was instrumental in organizing the YEP Program, a program that addressed latchkey kids and gave parents an alternative to after school care. We have also served as ambassadors for the Mayor and City Officials at special functions throughout the City. In keeping with their mission, the commission established a program eight-years-ago for high school senior women representing each of the Bossier Parish Schools. The commission mentors these outstanding young women throughout the entire school year hoping to develop well-rounded young women by providing them a firsthand experience in various components including, legal, economic, civic, cultural and educational areas of the community.
