Even before he took the mound last Monday, Shreveport-Bossier Captains lefthanded pitcher Ryan DiPietro found out that he was going to be an injury replacement for tonight’s American Association All-Star Game in Wichita. Then he went out and made that decision look good with a complete game victory at Pensacola on July 19 and a seven-inning solid performance against Grand Prairie on Saturday.
Now, DiPietro's efforts have earned him another accolade. He is the American Association Pitcher of the Week, as selected by Pointstreak, the league's official statistician. The Berlin, Conn., native avenged his only loss of the season by dominating the Pelicans on July 19, allowing five hits and only one first-inning run, with a walk and four strikeouts. He struck out seven, one off a season-high, in his win against the AirHogs at home, once again issuing just one walk while allowing two runs. On the season, DiPietro is 7-1 with a 3.82 ERA, with 49 strikeouts and 14 walks in 61 1/3 innings. The Shreveport-Bossier Captains have six All-Stars in tonight’s All-Star game. The others are pitchers Osvaldo Rodriguez, Richard Salazar and Hector Carrasco, designated hitter Chris Garcia and outfielder Palmer Karr, Jr. Outfielder Bryan Sabatella and shortstop Brian Frichter were also selected, but have been sidelined by injuries. The Captains will be back in action Thursday night to start a four-game series against the Fort Worth Cats in Fort Worth. Game time will be 7:05 p.m. Views: 307
