Minden detectives are urging the public to continue to use caution when opting to provide personal information on the Internet. With the convenience and ease of online banking, bill pay and shopping, it is easy to become complacent when it comes to guarding one’s identity and/or financial information.
“A local business called this week and informed us that their company had been included on a website — one that they had not established,” Minden Det. Chris Cheatham said. “Upon further investigation, it was discovered that there were several city and parish businesses listed on this site.” The sites are set up through LOOBOO Advertising Company, which features a 1-800 telephone number. The detective said the website provides the correct addresses and phone numbers for the companies involved. “These sites are not set up to allow individuals to make purchases, but we don’t know if the people who are creating these sites are working on that,” Cheatham said. “Right now, the sites list the correct phone numbers that allow interested parties to contact the businesses.” Cheatham said no fraud reports have been filed to date by customers in relation to these sites. However, he wants to take this opportunity to stress the importance of verifying who one is dealing with over the Internet before any information is exchanged. “There are always people conducting scams – on the Internet, through the mail, over the phone,” Cheatham said. “Just because a website looks legitimate, one should verify who they are dealing with before they provide any personal or financial information on the site.” Views: 1123
