Dorothy Ann Harris, whose family called her “Dorthan” was born to Willie Harris and Lovie Harris Aug. 14, 1946 in Minden. Her nine older siblings were Helen, George, Georgia, Minnie, Effie, Audry, Milton, Christine and Leon. At an early age she became a Christian. She joined Mt. Calm Baptist Church. Dorothy was a 1964 graduate of Webster High School, where she was a cheerleader and a football sweetheart. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts degrees from Southern University in Baton Rouge. She obtained her +30 from Louisiana Tech University. She became a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in 1976. She loved to work with the Jabberwock and Debutante Ball. In 1968, she began her career as an educator in Bossier Parish and served 35 years. She was a speech therapist and a coordinator at the Bossier Parish Evaluation Center. She married her high school sweetheart, Cleveland Harris, Jr. on Jan. 25, 1969. They were blessed with one son, Deric Metras Harris. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Cleveland Harris, Jr. and her son, Deric M. Harris (Felica). Other survivors include sisters, Georgia Pearl Hunt of Shreveport , Minnie Hudson of Los Angeles; a niece, whom she raised as a daughter, Betty Sue Wilson (Randell); three grandchildren, Shaderia, Alaysia and Devin (Boopy); one godchild, Damita Jones; and a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Her parents and the following siblings preceded her in death: Helen, Henry and George Harris, Effie Dean Gilmore, Audrey Hewitt, Milton Harris, Christine Harris and Leon Harris. Visitation will be held today, July 30, 2010, from 7 until 8 p.m. at St. Rest Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Rest Baptist Church.
