The only two Webster Parish soldiers to be killed during the Global War on Terrorism will be honored during a benefit composed of volunteers. The event is geared toward assisting members of the armed forces prior to being deployed.
The outdoor concert-style family fundraising event titled, “Jam Our Soldiers Home (J.O.S.H.),” is in honor of the late Sgt. Joshua A. Tomlinson, 24, of Dubberly and the late Sgt. Joshua B. Madden, 21, of Minden. Tomlinson was killed May 18, 2010, in Afghanistan, while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. Madden was killed Dec. 6, 2006, while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Both men lost their lives as a result of roadside bombs. “Our goal is to assist in getting our soldiers home to their family and loved ones before being deployed,” said Linda Mahfouz, Tomlinson’s aunt. Mahfouz is the lead coordinator for the event. “Our main goal is to concentrate on soldiers here close to home and to also pay this forward to other U.S. service members, regardless of where the live,” Mahfouz continued. All proceeds from the event will go toward assisting military service members with travel costs associated with returning home to visit their loved ones before being deployed to warzones. The funds will assist all branches of the military nationwide, while focusing on area service members first. “These men and women are all our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, wives, husbands, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. The list goes on. We should extend our hands and hearts to whomever we can help. It is unfortunate that they may not return safely,” Mahfouz said. The outdoor jam fest is slated for Saturday, August 14, from 4 until 9 p.m., on property at 5788 Hwy 80, Princeton, which has been donated for use by Princeton resident Dennis Trombley and family. Flags and signs will be posted along Hwy. 80 to guide motorists to the event site. “I’ve been inspired by our military,” Trombley said. “Doing this for our soldiers has been by far the greatest thing that I’ve ever been involved in and will probably be the greatest thing I will ever do.” Area bands scheduled to perform include Standing Room Only, Stiff Necked Fools, and The Underdogs. Other local talent will also take the stage. Children’s activities include face painting, moonwalk and a waterslide. Parents are asked to supply towels for their children as well as a change of clothes if necessary. Other to-dos include photos with Muscle Cars and custom bikes for a small donation. An arm-wrestling challenge will also be held with Champion Arm-Wrestler Kevin Simpson. A series of drawings will also be held. Concessions will be available. However, those attending may also bring their own coolers for a $10 fee. No glass containers will be allowed on the premises. Upon entry, donations of $5 for individuals ages 13 and up; and $1 for persons 12 and under, will be accepted. Donations may also be at Chase Bank in the name of “Soldiers Home Benefit.” Although a number of chairs and tables will be provided, those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
